IFRES 2005 RESEARCH GRANTS RECIPIENTS COMPLETE THEIR PROJECTS  
 

The completed Research Reports of the maiden recipients of IFRES research grants has been submitted to the Foundation. The recipients were charged to further strengthen their capacity by subjecting their reports to peer review with emphasis on internationally acknowledged journals. Receieving the Reports, the President, IFRES Professor F.S. Idachaba, OFR commended the efforts of Dr Mrs O.I.Y. Ajani who presented an output of her research at the 7th GEM-IWG International Conference held in University of Utah, Salt Lake City between 2-3 July 2006 and Dr. O.D. Kolawole whose paper(an output of the IFRES funded research) has been accepted for presentation at an International Conference on Infrastructure Development and the Environment (ICIDEN-Abuja 2006) holding between 10 and 15 September 2006 in Abuja Nigeria.
The recipients were all presented cheques for the fourth and final tranche of their individual grant value.They were all commended for attending and making useful inputs at the 2006 IFRGA Mid-term Project review workshop.

IFRES MID-TERM REVIEW WORKSHOP

 
 

The Foundation has held its mid-term project review workshop for the 2006 Idachaba Foundation Research Grant Awards (IFRGA) recipients. The workshop held between 3 and 4 August 2006 was attended by: the recipients; Resource persons (Professor S. Tunji Titilola and Dr. A.A. Adubi); the President, IFRES Professor Idachaba, and his wife Dr E.A. Idachaba, representing the Board; Mr I.O. Akingbade (Office of the Special Assistant to President on Food Security, Abuja) and the 2005 IFRES Reseach Grant recipients among other participants. At the workshop, the recipeints presented an update on their IFRES funded research project including some preliminary results. Grey areas of the output were resolved via inputs from the resource persons and other academics present.
At the end of the two-day event, the recipients were presented cheques for the second tranche of their awards. They are expected to converge in January 2007 for the final project review workshop following which the completed 2006 IFRGA Research Reports would be submitted

 
     

IFRES NOW WELCOME APPLICATIONS FOR 2007 RESEARCH GRANTS

 
 

The first stage of the 2007 IFRES Research Grants has now commenced. IFRES is now receiving applications from interested and qualified persons through the submission of Concept Notes on any of the 10 priority themes for the 2007 IFRES grant year. IFRES 2006 PREFIELD EXECUTION WORKSHOP
 
 

A prefield execution workshop for recipients of the Idachaba Foundation Research Grant Awards 2006 was held on 30 January 2006 . The workshop was aimed at intimating the new recipients about the working if IFRES, reposition the research project for effective execution and presentation of 1st tranche of the research grant fund. Present at the workshop were the President, IFRES and current Vice chancellor, Kogi State University, Professor F.S. Idachaba; Professor M.O. Kayode, representing the Board of Trustees; some of the maiden grant recipients; the 2006 grant recipients; Dr A.A. Adubi (resource person) and staff of the Foundation

 
 
 
 
 

IFRES BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVES 9 PROPOSALS FOR FUNDING, and N1.7million for Scholarship

 
 

The Board of Trustees of the F. S. Idachaba Foundation for Research and Scholarship (IFRES) at its Third Board Meeting of 14 January 2006 considered and approved the sum of N2, 269,500 as total IFRES research grants for the year 2006 awards. Authors of 9 proposals from the earlier shortlisted 15 applicants qualified, purely on merit regardless of ethnic or geo-political origin, sex, religion, academic discipline or mother tongue, as beneficiaries of the grant which range from N223, 000 for “Rural Infrastructure and Household Income: An Analysis of farming households in Kwara State . ” by A.G. Ibrahim to a maximum grant of N270, 600 for “Health Nutrition and Labour Productivity among Female Farmers in Imo State Nigeria . ” by F.T Agulanna, with a median (middle) grant value of N255, 500.

Also in appreciation of the earlier support (1956 – 61)of the Igala Native Authority to the Foundation President, the Board of Trustees of the Idachaba Foundation also approved a sum of up to N1.7 million for a once-and-for-all grant of N20, 000 for every Igala student who scored 280 and above in the 2005 JAMBUME. Recipients of thisgrant should collect their cheques at the Sixth Igala Education Summit holding at the Kogi State University , Anyigba on 29 December 2006 , with documentary evidence of admission into University of first choice

IFRES 2005 RESEARCH GRANTS PROJECT COMPLETION WORKSHOP
 
 

Recipients of the Idachaba Foundation, IFRES maiden grant year 2005 awards participated in the project completion workshop held between 12 and 13 January 2006 .The workshop was organised to fine-tune the research reports based on comments from peer review and the resource persons. Highlights of the workshop include the presentation of completed project reports by the recipients, comments and clarification of grey areas based on the presentations. The workshop was highly informative and contributed to the knowledge level of the participants. Present at the workshop were the President, IFRES and current Vice chancellor, Kogi State University, Professor F.S. Idachaba, Dr.(Mrs) E.A. Idachaba, representing the Board of Trustees, the 9 maiden grant recipients, Dr A.A. Adubi(resource person) Dr. S.O. Isehunwa(resource person)and staff of the Foundation. The complete research project report is expected to be submitted in March 2006.

 
 
 

KOGI STATE GOVERNMENT APPOINTS IDACHABA AS VICE CHANCELLOR

 
 
 
 

The Governor of Kogi State, Nigeria, His Excellency, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, has invited Professor F.S. Idachaba, OFR, to serve as the Vice Chancellor of the State University, Kogi State University, Anyigba. His mission,from June 2005, is to salvage, re-engineer and transform the university from its accreditation problems.

 
 
 

IDACHABA SELECTED AS ELDER STATESMAN FOR NATIONAL POLITICAL REFORM CONFERENCE

 
 
 
 
The President, F. S. Idachaba Foundation for Research and Scholarship (IFRES), Professor F. S. Idachaba, OFR, has been selected as a Respectable Elder Statesman by President Olusegun Obasanjo to participate in the Nigerian National Political Reform Conference.
 
 
 
  Inaugurating the National Political Reform Conference at the International Conference Centre, Abuja on Monday 21 February 2005, President Obasanjo implored delegates to the Conference to “discuss and reach consensus on governance arrangement for reinforcing unity, cohesion, stability, security, progress, development and performance of the Nigerian Federation” with the aim of strengthening the structures of democratic governance in Nigeria. Obasanjo charged delegates to examine the following challenges facing the Nigerian nation, among others:  
     
 

1. Constitutionalism and constitutional reform

 
     
  2. Building new, accountable and responsive political leadership  
     
  3. Building, operating and sustaining real political parties  
     
  4. Electoral reforms that ensure credibility and respectability of elections  
     
  5. Relations among tiers of government, and  
     
  6. Performance of government and how to ensure truly democratic governance for all  
     
  In addition to the Elder Statesmen, there are six nominated representatives from each of the 36 states of the Nigerian federation, representatives of retired military personnel as well as representations from a wide spectrum of civil society groups. The conference has three months within which to complete its assignment  
     
     

IFRES 2005 Research grants mid-term reveiw workshop

 
 

The Mid-term Project Review workshop for the Maiden grantees of IFRES was held on 22 July 2005 at the Foundation’s office building, No. 47 Francis Okediji Street Bodija, Ibadan. The workshop featured presentation of progress report by each of the recipients of the maiden grants, peer review of each recipients work both among the recipients and together with the resource person. Grey areas of the presentation were explained as colleagues asked questions after each grantee’s presentation. Suggestions for a good output of the research grants were also made.

 
     
 

Present at the workshop were Professor Idachaba President and Chairman Board of Trustees (BOT) IFRES, Dr. Mrs. E.A. Idachaba member BOT, IFRES, Mr. Ileanwa Idachaba Secretary BOT, IFRES, Dr A.A. Adubi (Resource person) Mr. I.O. Akingbade (Resource person) and staff of IFRES.

 
     
     

IFRES invites authors of 15 shortlisted concept notes to develop full proposals

 
  At the closure of receipt of concept note applications for the 2006 research grants, 41 concept notes were shortlisted for assessment. Of these, 15 have been invited to develop full proposals to be submitted by Friday 14 October 2005. Letters of invitation and guidelines has been sent (by post and email) to the concerned applicants  
     
     

Kogi State University declares academic staff vacancies

 
 

Authorities of the Kogi State University Anyigba, Kogi state, under the Vice-Chancellorship of Professor F.S. Idachaba, OFR is inviting applications from qualified and experienced middle level and senior academics to join the staff of the university. First spinal injury surgery in Nigeria

 
 

A surgeon with the National Orthopaedic Hospital , Kano , Dr. Mohammed Salihu has performed the first ever spinal injury surgery in the country. The operation was carried out on a 21 year-old patient who sustained spinal injury during an accident.
